Pre Assessment:

Before the actual lesson, students will complete a google form that will ask basic questions about their prior knowledge of voting and the voting process. The pre-assessment also asks about access to technology (specifically Instagram) that will be used later on in the lesson during the reflection portion. The class will be able to access the voting mural Instagram page through the support materials tab on our website which will be presented on the day of the teaser and pre-assessment. The link to the voting website will be made available to students through a message on canvas.

Discussion Questions (after slideshow and Jamboard):

Why do you think voting is important? How can voting affect you and/or your community? What aspects of voting do you want to include in the mural? What colors do you want to include in the mural? Are there any vocab. terms that resonate with you that you want to utilize for the mural? How can voting be used to voice your thoughts/opinions?

Student Reflective / Inquiry Activity:

  • After finishing the mural, students will all sit in front of the mural and participate in a class discussion, led by teachers, that focuses on the importance of voting, what students learned from the voting lesson, why they decided to choose the designs they did for the mural and how this final mural relates back to the topic of voting.

  • After the verbal class discussion, students will access the instagram account that teachers made to participate in an online critique. Students will also be able to see the progress of the mural, and also have the option to explore informative links that teachers posted to the instagram page. During the online critique on the instagram page, teachers posted a picture of the three different sections (or groups) that the students worked on to complete the mural. Students will be instructed to comment one glow and one grow on a section they did not work on for the mural. (Glow= something successful in the work, Grow= something that can be improved in the work). After students post one glow and one grow they will be instructed to go to the picture of the section they worked on and review the feedback they got from their peers.

Post-Assessment (teacher-centered) Include assessment instrument:

  • As teachers we will evaluate students based on their overall participation during the two-day lesson. We expect students to to achieve each learning target presented in our objectives section.

  • We will also look at and assess if each student participated in the jamboard activity. We will look at whether each student participated in the written responses to the questions posted in the jamboard, as well as posting pictures of their final sketches for the design proposal on the blank pages in the jamboard. This use of technology is associated with the learning in this lesson because it opens the classroom for thoughtful discussions focused around the topic of voting. Students will also discuss why they posted what they did and how it connects to the topic of voting and its importance.

  • We will mainly evaluate students based on their participation in the entire lesson ( participation in ideation sheet, jamboard activities, class collaboration, class discussions, mixing paints and/or transferring designs to the wall, helping paint the mural, as well as participation in the verbal critique as well as the online critique).

  • We will evaluate whether students have a better understanding of voting and its importance by leading a verbal, end of class discussion in which teachers will ask students questions like: what is something you learned during this lesson? What can you improve for next time? How can voting impact you personally? How do these symbols and designs that are used in the mural reflect voting? How will you use this learned information about voting and apply it in your own life?
